As we take time to honor the people of the Hispanic and Latino culture and remember the important role they have played in our history, we also take time to recognize a need in their community.
According to the US Government Information on Organ Donation and Transplantation (organdonor.gov), there are approximately 23,000 Hispanics and Latinos waiting for an organ transplant. Because of the high rate of diabetes and End Stage Renal Failure, 19,000 of them are waiting for a kidney. On average, 22 people die each day waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.
