March is Kidney Donor Month

The month of March is dedicated to raising awareness about improving and saving people’s lives with kidney failure through organ donation. There are over 121,000 people on the organ transplant waiting list and over 100,000 of those are waiting for a kidney. The average wait time for a kidney transplant is 4 years. An average of 22 people die each day while waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

One donor has the potential to save and improve 2 people’s lives waiting for a kidney transplant. A kidney can also be donated from a living donor. One deceased donor also has the potential to save 6 other people’s lives and improve the quality of life to as many as 50 others.

In 2015, The Ultimate Gift of Life Foundation worked in the states of Texas and New Mexico to increase the number of registered organ donors. We attended 103 events, registered 1210 new organ donors, confirmed 2493 organ donors and reached over 5000 others. Events include speaking events at different clubs and organizations. A Booth is set up at festivals and athletic events. At athletic events, we often have informational inserts in the athletes’ welcome bag. We find that at athletic events, we meet people from all over the US and some foreign countries. We also reach people though our Facebook page and website. At events, anyone who registers to be an organ donor for the first time or anyone who allows us to confirm that they are in the donor registry receives a free Ultimate Gift of Life t-shirt. This is another way we raise awareness about saving lives through organ donation. Look for our t-shirts when you are out and about.
