April is Donate Life Month. It is a month dedicated to raising awareness about organ donation and honoring those whose lives have been impacted by organ donation.
According to United Network for Organ Sharing, in 2020, there were 39,035 transplants made possible by over 12,500 deceased donors and more than 5,700 living donors.
According to information at donatelife.net, 95% of Americans are in favor of being an organ donor, but only 58% are registered. Currently, there are over 107,000 people waiting for a life saving transplant and an average of 20 people die each day while waiting.
When you register to be a deceased organ donor, you have the potential to save 8 lives, restore sight to 2 people and improve the quality of life to 75 people or more. Wow, what a legacy!
It is also possible for you to donate a kidney or a portion of your liver while you are still alive. For more information on living donation go to Living Donation Facts and Resources from UNOS | Living Donor Transplants.
If you have already registered to be an organ donor through the motor vehicle department, on your state’s registry or the national registry, please take one more step and tell your loved ones so that they can honor your wishes.
If you would like to register to be an organ donor, go to Become an Organ Donor • The Ultimate Gift of Life Foundation.
